Sparsity-Based Data Reconstruction Models for Biomedical Imaging

چکیده
We propose new regularization models to solve inverse problems encountered in biomedical imaging applications. In formulating mathematical schemes, we base our approach on the sparse signal processing principles that have emerged as a central paradigm in the field. We adopt a variational perspective and specify the proposed sparsity-promoting data reconstruction models as energy minimization problems. To design practical algorithms, we develop novel iterative methods to efficiently perform the consequent optimization task. The thesis is organized in three main parts. In the first part, our main contribution is the introduction of a proper statistically-based discretization paradigm for inverse problems. In particular, our framework considers a continuous-domain stochastic signal model and characterizes a specific class of inference algorithms. We show that derived inference-based methods cover the classical Tikhonov-type techniques as well as a wide range of the sparsity-promoting schemes including the well-known `1-norm regularization and its nonconvex variants. This provides a unifying stochastic perception of the resolution of inverse problems. In the second part, we propose a novel phase retrieval algorithm for imaging unstained biological samples that are optically thin. In specific terms, we use the transport-of-intensity equation (TIE) relating the spatial phase map of a field to the derivative of its intensity along the propagation direction. We analyze the implications of using the TIE formalism with finer and coarser approximations of said derivative. Based on this analysis, our contribution is a practical phase reconstruction algorithm that incorporates a sparsity-based regularization. The developed technique operates with a standard bright-field microscope. Experiments on real data illustrate that our phase reconstruction algorithm is viable and can be a low-cost alternative to dedicated phase microscopes.

SART-Type Image Reconstruction from a Limited Number of Projections with the Sparsity Constraint
Based on the recent mathematical findings on solving the linear inverse problems with sparsity constraints by Daubechiesx et al., here we adapt a simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART) for image reconstruction from a limited number of projections subject to a sparsity constraint in terms of an invertible compression transform. The algorithm is implemented with an exemplary Haar ...
متن کاملFast System Matrix Calculation in CT Iterative Reconstruction
Introduction: Iterative reconstruction techniques provide better image quality and have the potential for reconstructions with lower imaging dose than classical methods in computed tomography (CT). However, the computational speed is major concern for these iterative techniques. The system matrix calculation during the forward- and back projection is one of the most time- cons...

Real-time imaging of human brain has become an important technique within neuroimaging. In this study, a fast and efficient sensitivity map generation based on Finite Element Models (FEM) is developed which utilises a reduced sensitivitys matrix taking advantage of sparsity and parallelisation processes. Time and memory efficiency of these processes are evaluated and compared with conventional ...
متن کاملSparsity-based multi-height phase recovery in holographic microscopy
High-resolution imaging of densely connected samples such as pathology slides using digital in-line holographic microscopy requires the acquisition of several holograms, e.g., at >6-8 different sample-to-sensor distances, to achieve robust phase recovery and coherent imaging of specimen. Reducing the number of these holographic measurements would normally result in reconstruction artifacts and ...
متن کاملUltra-Fast Image Reconstruction of Tomosynthesis Mammography Using GPU
Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) is a technology that creates three dimensional (3D) images of breast tissue. Tomosynthesis mammography detects lesions that are not detectable with other imaging systems. If image reconstruction time is in the order of seconds, we can use Tomosynthesis systems to perform Tomosynthesis-guided Interventional procedures. This research has been designed to study u...
